Here's A Story Scarier Than Jose Abreu Needing Surgery To Save One Of His Balls

Jose Abreu is back in the starting lineup for the White Sox after being out since Aug. 21. The all-star first baseman apparently had emergency surgery to save one of his testicles.

Here's Abreu describing what happened. Via NBC Sports Chicago.

“It was one of my testicles turned sideways and was strangled,” he said through a team translator. “The doctor had to perform emergency surgery to save it. I never thought about it, but it was serious. The doctors they did a very good job and everything is good. They saved the testicle. I’m really glad and thankful like I said before for all the people who helped me and who were there for me. I feel very grateful right now.”

What exactly is testicular torsion? From the Mayo Clinic.

Testicular torsion occurs when a testicle rotates, twisting the spermatic cord that brings blood to the scrotum. The reduced blood flow causes sudden and often severe pain and swelling. Testicular torsion is most common between ages 12 and 18, but it can occur at any age, even before birth. Testicular torsion usually requires emergency surgery. If treated quickly, the testicle can usually be saved. But when blood flow has been cut off for too long, a testicle might become so badly damaged that it has to be removed.
