I know that overreacting after the first week of games isn't always the most productive exercise, but when you see what Luis Robert is doing down in the minors it's hard not to pay closer attention. The White Sox prospect hasn't just started the 2019 season hot, Robert has been unstoppable through the first five games at Single-A.
I mean, what better way to start the season than by hitting two home runs in your very first two at-bats. Robert followed his two-homer, 5 RBI season debut with another multi-hit game, plus another run batted in and two stolen bases. In his third game, the center fielder had three more hits, including a double and yes another RBI.
All right, players go on hot streaks all the time, but Robert wasn't done yet. In his fourth game he had two more hits, which included his third home run of the season and three RBIs.
On Monday night, Robert had his fifth straight multi-hit game to begin the year, hitting a double in his first at-bat and then a home run in his second.
Through five games this season, Robert has a 1.774 OPS, with 4 home runs, 12 RBIs, two doubles, three steals and a .524 batting average.
That's insane.
Robert only played in 50 games last year, sidelined twice with a pair of thumb injuries. Yet, he's healthy now and is blossoming into the star prospect the White Sox envisioned when they signed him a few years ago. And right now, it's pretty easy to see a scenario in which the White Sox push Robert through their minor league system fast.
The White Sox often promote their rising prospects until the summer, in June or around the All-Star break. But man, if Robert keeps dominating at Winston-Salem, the high Single-A Class affiliate for the White Sox, then there's really no point in wasting his time there.
A promotion to Double-A might just come sooner than first expected and if he continues to excel, then we're talking about a possible promotion to Triple-A by the end of the season if the White Sox get really aggressive.
And hey, as long as we're being optimistic here, if you really want to look ahead to 2020, Luis Robert might be in a perfect spot to be the center fielder on Opening Day if he keeps going on his current trajectory.
