The Chicago White Sox are now seven games behind first place in the American League Central Division and as the losses continue to stack up it's becoming clearer how Rick Hahn and the front office will approach this year's trade deadline. At least they'll have plenty to sell, including one of the better starting pitchers in baseball.
Lucas Giolito recorded his 10th quality start of the season on Tuesday night, as he held down the Toronto Blue Jays to a pair of runs over six innings of work. The right-hander was in line for the win, but Joe Kelly gave up a go-ahead homer in the eighth and the White Sox offense couldn't come up with anything else after Luis Robert hit a three-run homer in the sixth.
After a tough 2022 season, Giolito has regained his form this season and if it continues he'll be rewarded with a lucrative contract when he goes through free agency in the offseason. The 28-year-old has a 3.50 ERA through 18 starts in 2023, striking out 92 batters in 105.1 innings.
On April 7, Giolito allowed 7 earned runs in only 4 innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but since then the right-hander has posted a 2.99 ERA in 16 starts.
At 37-50, the White Sox only seem like they still in it because of a weak division. A few more middling weeks leading up to the trade deadline and the front office will have to face reality. Barring a hot streak, the White Sox are viewed as sellers and Giolito is at least helping raise his value with each start.
Here are some of the likeliest trade destinations for Lucas Giolito.
Baltimore Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles have continued their momentum from the 2022 season and now one of the better teams in the American League with a 49-35 record, third-best in the AL. Unfortunately, the Orioles are stuck in a division that has the Tampa Bay Rays, the best team in the AL at 57-31. Baltimore trails Tampa Bay by six games, but the Orioles are the top Wild Card team heading into Wednesday's slate of games.
However, the Orioles could use help in the rotation, as their starters rank 8th worst with a 4.69 ERA and are below league average with a total of 29 quality starts.
As for the White Sox, the Orioles' top-rated minor league system would surely be great to look at in trade negotiations.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Another young and fun team that has been near the top of the National League for almost the entire season. While the Arizona Diamondbacks currently have a 50-36 record, only behind the Atlanta Braves for the best record in the NL, they are only 2.5 games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
The Diamondbacks' pitching staff is led by Zac Gallen, but their second-best starter this season in Merrill Kelly is currently on the 15-day injured list after a blood clot was discovered in his right calf. Even when Kelly does return after the All-Star break, Arizona lacks quality depth in the starting rotation. The Diamondbacks have a combined 4.62 ERA from their starting pitchers this season, ranked 10th worst in MLB.
According to FanGraphs, the Diamondbacks farm system ranks second-best in baseball.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers have hung around in 2023 despite some major injuries. Clayton Kershaw was recently placed on the 15-day injured list with shoulder soreness and on the 4th of July, the Dodgers learned that Dustin May will need elbow surgery that will most likely sideline him for the rest of the season.
The Dodgers are currently 47-38, second in the NL West, but they are a clear Wild Card team that may look to add to their starting rotation to close the gap with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Dodgers also have a top-5 ranked minor league system.
Other teams that can realistically get in the mix for Giolito include the surprising Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies and Seattle Mariners.
