Lucas Giolito tweaked his left hamstring during Wednesday's series finale against the Royals and was taken out after pitching 2.2 innings. The White Sox have now placed Giolito on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.
Terrible timing for Giolito, who was dominating the Royals on Wednesday. He had five strikeouts and hadn't allowed a hit before the injury.
The 24-year-old righty has made four starts this season, two good and two bad ones, as he's still trying to find consistency. Giolito has a 5.30 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 18.2 innings.
Right-hander Carson Fulmer will take Giolito's spot on the pitching staff. Fulmer came up for one game last week and pitched well, throwing three innings, striking out three, allowing one run on three hits. He did get into some trouble after walking a few batters in the ninth, which led to the earned run. But hey, that was an improvement to his overall MLB career so far, as Fulmer has posted a 6.53 ERA in 70.1 innings in the majors.
And the last roster move the White Sox made was calling up Ryan Cordell to replace Daniel Palka.
Rick Renteria is wasting no time getting Cordell in the starting lineup, batting him ninth and playing him in right field against the Tigers today.
Cordell, 27, was 2-for-6, with a home run and three RBIs in five games this season before he was sent down to Triple-A. In seven games at Charlotte, the outfielder went 10-for-31 (.323 avg.) with a home run, triple and three doubles.
Palka was optioned down to Triple-A following Wednesday's game. He finally broke his hitless streak, but it came on a broken-bat single. Palka's 1-for-35 this season in the big leagues. Hopefully he hasn't lost all confidence and we'll see him again later in 2019.
With Giolito on the injured list, look for Manny Banuelos to jump into the starting rotation for the time being. Banuelos has a 3.48 ERA in 10.1 innings out of the bullpen this season.
