In 2018, Luis Robert was limited to only 50 minor league games because of injuries, so the White Sox sent the prospect to get additional playing time against more experienced competition in the Arizona Fall League. He was still coming back from a thumb injury that factored into Robert not hitting a home run in his first full season playing in the United States.
Yet, the center fielder showed flashes of what he was capable of.
Robert played in 18 Arizona Fall League games in 2018, slashed .324/.367/.432, and has catapulted up the prospect rankings since.
This year the White Sox are sending six more prospects to the Arizona Fall League, headlined by left-handed hitters Blake Rutherford and Gavin Sheets. Micker Adolfo might also be headed to Arizona, but he hasn't officially been placed on a roster.
Rutherford was a first round pick by the Yankees in 2016, and was traded to the White Sox in 2017. The 22-year-old outfielder has struggled overall at Double-A in 2019, posting a .673 OPS in 114 games. He has improved since the All-Star break, slashing .292/.344/.398, with four home runs and nine doubles.
Like Rutherford, Sheets has heated up in the second half of this season, hitting .303/.384/.500, in his last 59 games at Double-A. He has 16 home runs this year, while doubling his extra base hits since the All-Star break.
Those are the two big names, but it'll be interesting to see how all the White Sox prospects perform against a good level of competition for seven weeks.
