The White Sox have left plenty to be desired this season. They are nine games under .500, but they sit only 5.5 games out of first place. The Tigers series was a very odd one, as they won a game only scoring runs on wild pitches, but Sunday was a bit different and could be the turning point of the season.
It's Burger Time
Jake Burger has arguably the best player on the team this year, and definitely one of the most consistent. He is hitting .265 with 12 home runs and 29 RBIs. That is pretty good for a guy who didn't even make the team out of spring training.
In yesterday's game, it looked like he was having an off day, as he had struck out three times. But, in the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded, Jake called game and hit a walk-off grand slam that gave the Sox the sweep over the Tigers. For a team like the Sox, this could be a big momentum changer.
Burger has played at an all-star level and should be on the all-star team come July. Burger has carried this lineup and provided a spark when it is needed the most. I don't appreciate Pedro Grifol him sitting as often as he does, as he should be in the lineup every day.
The White Sox bats have been pretty cold otherwise and they will need to pick it up if they want to win the AL Central. Scoring 10 runs in a three-game series against someone making their MLB debut and non-all-star pitching is not great. The Sox need to get more out of their guys if they want to compete.
A Great Day For Liam Hendriks
As if Burger's walk-off grand slam wasn't enough, it was a great day for Liam Hendriks as well. Not only did Liam strike out two batters in the ninth inning to keep the game tied, but he got the win on National Cancer Survivor's Day. What an amazing story.
It is so nice to see Liam back out there on the mound. The best part is, he really looks like his old self. In the first few outings he was sitting consistently at 95-96, but yesterday he was getting it up to 97, which is around his average velocity. On top of that, his slider has looked much better since the first outing, which was to be expected. His ability to rebound this quickly has been absolutely insane.
Liam's presence and ability to save games for the White Sox should give them some more juice. If one of your best players coming back from cancer and winning a game on National Cancer Survivor's Day can't motivate you, I am not sure what will.
If the pitching, which was great this series, can continue at this rate the White Sox can potentially make it back to .500 and be in the run to win this horrible division. They will need the best out of Lance Lynn, as he has been the main weak spot in the rotation.
Regardless, Sunday's game could be the turning point in the season and the game we look back to later in the year as the game that changed everything for the 2023 White Sox.
