The Chicago White Sox's number two prospect, Oscar Colas, took the field with baseball future stars Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.
He entered the game for the American League in the top of the fourth inning as a pinch hitter. Colas went 1-for-2. He flew out sharply to right field in his first at-bat before singling off Jose A Ferrer in the sixth.
But his most significant impact was on the defensive end in center field. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Colas got a good jump on a sinking line drive off the bat of Darren Baker and dove head first to secure the catch. Baker is the son of Houston Astro's manager, Dusty Baker.
Colas played three season's in Cuba's Serie Nacional and three in Japan's minor Western League before signing with the White Sox in January for $2.7 million. He was hyped as the "Cuban Ohtani" because of his ability to hit and pitch. He has a fastball that touches 95 mph, but has yet to pitch a game this season. His arm strength is being utilized in the outfield instead. While his pitching days are behind him, he has certainly lived up to the hype as a hitter. Colas started the season with the White Sox high-A affiliate Winston Salem. He slashed .211/.369/.475 with a .844 OPS in 59 games. In 244 at-bats, he recorded 23 extra-base hits, including seven home runs. He was recently promoted to Double-A Birmingham. In three games in Double-A, he has five hits, two RBIs, and a walk.
