White Sox catcher James McCann was one of five players that the team needed to decide whether to tender a contract or not by tonight's deadline and as expected he'll be back on the South Side in 2020.
The two sides avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $5.4 million salary for the 2020 season.
McCann, 29, was an All-Star in 2019, but his numbers plummeted in the second half, when he slashed .226/.281/.413, in 208 at-bats. Overall in his first year with the White Sox McCann had a .788 OPS with 18 home runs. More importantly, he and Lucas Giolito established a great rapport this past season, leading to a breakout year for the White Sox ace.
McCann was projected to make $4.9 million in 2020 according to MLBTR's estimations. So, a nice little pay bump for the catcher.
