White Sox Call Up Two Players, Here's Why Zack Collins Isn't One Of Them

The White Sox finally jettisoned AJ Reed from their roster following Thursday's 4-0 loss to the Mets. He lasted 14 games, striking out 21 times in less than 50 at-bats. Replacing him is 30-year-old Matt Skole.

But that's not the only move the White Sox made prior to their weekend series against the Phillies. Veteran catcher Welington Castillo won't be with the team because of a family emergency.

And that most likely explains why the White Sox are calling up Seby Zavala instead of Zack Collins.

Castillo will be gone for at least three days, but no more than a week while on family emergency leave. So, the White Sox really only need a catcher in case James McCann gets hurt during the next few games.

There's really no point in bringing up Collins if he's most likely not even going to play. Even when they did bring him up earlier this season Collins only played in nine games in nearly one month.

Of course, Collins didn't do much to convince the White Sox to keep him up, going 2-for-26 in his limited time. But for now, it's better to keep him in the every day lineup at Triple-A than sitting on the bench in Philadelphia.

Back to Skole. He made his MLB debut last year with the White Sox, going 3-for-11, with a home run in four games. The left-handed hitter has 21 home runs and an .880 OPS in 92 games at Triple-A this year.
