Throw hard and hope they swing!
On Friday, the White Sox announced that they claimed right-handed pitcher Jimmy Cordero off waivers from the Mariners. The 27-year-old has been optioned to Triple-A Charlotte. To make room for Cordero on the 40-man roster, the White Sox moved Carlos Rodon to the 60-day injured list, as the lefty rehabs from Tommy John surgery.
Cordero made his MLB debut in 2018, with the Nationals. He made 22 appearances and struggled, posting a 5.68 ERA and 1.84 WHIP in 19 innings.
The 27-year-old has been traveling all over the country this season, starting the year still in the Nationals' organization and was then picked up by the Blue Jays in the middle of May. Cordero was with the Blue Jays for a couple days after he was called up from the minors and made one appearance in the majors.
The Mariners then picked him up and a week later he's in the White Sox organization. He's pitched in 14 games with three different minor league teams this year, recording a 5.40 ERA in 16.2 innings.
Cordero's best attribute is that he can throw hard, once reaching 104mph a few years back. His fastball averages in the high 90s, but he's always struggled with his command.
In 284.1 career innings in the minors, Cordero's walked 156 batters. In his small sample size in the majors, he's walked 12 batters in 20.1 innings.
Maybe he can figure it out? Probably not, but at least he throws hard.
