The White Sox hoped that Nomar Mazara could reach his potential with them beginning in 2020, but there will be a new starting right fielder on the south side Opening Day.
According to the White Sox transactions page on MLB.com, Mazara was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. A specific reason was not given, which immediately raises a red flag. Could this be a COVID-19 positive result?
Mazara did not appear in either of the team's preseason games against the Cubs this week and White Sox manager Rick Renteria did say the outfielder was feeling ill when asked to update Mazara's status Tuesday afternoon.
First, you hope that Mazara gets healthy and secondly if he did test positive for the coronavirus you definitely hope it didn't spread to anyone else.
So, the White Sox will now have either Adam Engel or Leury Garcia in right field to begin the season. That may or may not also lead to the White Sox being forced into having Nick Madrigal on the Opening Day roster.
The White Sox play one more exhibition game Wednesday night at home against the Brewers.
