We're still waiting for the big news of Eloy Jimenez's contract, but the White Sox did make a couple other moves on Friday. First, they released 33-year-old outfielder Brandon Guyer and then signed 32-year-old shortstop Alcides Escobar.
Guyer was signed to a minor-league deal in February and was a non-roster invitee to spring training.
He played in 11 Cactus League games for the White Sox and batted .217, with a home run and three RBIs. From 2011-18, Guyer played with the Rays and Indians. He has a career slash line of .250/.339/.338, but in 2018, Guyer struggled posting a .671 OPS in 194 at-bats. As for Escobar, he'll report to minor league camp with the White Sox.
The 32-year-old shortstop used to be a top-20 prospect when he was coming up through the Brewers system, but he's been a well below average hitter for most of his MLB career. Escobar played the last eight seasons with the Royals, won a World Series ring in 2015, was an All-Star that year and also won a gold glove too. He's a career .258 hitter, with a .293 OBP. So, the next biggest move will be who's going to be off the Opening Day roster now that Jimenez is going to be signed and the service time issue is no longer a problem. The odd-man out is most likely going to be Nicky Delmonico.
