For the fifth straight night, the White Sox trailed late and for the fifth straight night, they walked off the field as winners.
The White Sox found themselves trailing the Twins 7-4 in the seventh inning. A familiar spot for a team that was one strike away from losing on night earlier, before Michael A Taylor snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. On Thursday it was Kyle Teel's turn to play the hero.
The rookie catcher sent a Travis Adams cutter 413 feet into left field to tie the game at seven. The ball left his bat a 113 mph, giving Teel his sixth homer of the season. But the White Sox rookies weren't done making an impact.
In the ninth, Colson Montgomery launched a two-run blast 454 feet, nearly clearing Target Field. With an exit velocity of 111 mph, it gave the White Sox an 11–7 lead and pushed Montgomery into a tie for the most homers in MLB since the All-Star break with 17. He also became the only rookie in the MLB this season with multiple homers traveling over 450-feet.
With the 11–8 victory, the White Sox pulled off their fifth consecutive comeback, a feat the franchise hasn’t seen since 1986.
The resiliency of Will Venable’s young squad has been striking — especially given who’s been leading the charge. Edgar Quero and Kyle Teel each tallied three hits, Chase Meidroth collected four, and Winkleman Gonzalez earned his first MLB victory.
“We talked about it all year with these guys continuing to to fight and obviously earlier in the year not getting the results,” Venable told MLB.com after the game. “But that never stopped this group from continuing to to go out there and fight and it’s really nice to continue that competitive spirit and get some good results.”
The 11-8 win also gave the White Sox their first ever four game sweep of the Twins, and clinched the season series 8-5 after going 1-12 against their division rival last season.
