Chicago White Sox fans were getting restless, as Mike Clevinger was the only notable free agent signing the team had made until Friday. All of a sudden, rumors flooded social media and hours later the White Sox signed outfielder Andrew Benintendi to the largest contract in franchise history.
You can read more about the Benintendi signing here.
The White Sox also made a few other moves, bringing in two players to the organization on minor-league deals.
Billy Hamilton Returns to White Sox
On Saturday, MLB.com and White Sox writer Scott Merkin reported that outfielder Billy Hamilton is coming back to the White Sox on a minor-league contract.
Hamilton, 32, made it up to the majors during the 2022 season with the Miami Marlins and Minnesota Twins, combining to play in a total of 37 games with both teams. He began the year with the Seattle Mariners, but Hamilton opted out of his minor league deal with them in June.
Although Hamilton wasn't a huge part of the 2021 division-winning White Sox, he certainly made a lot of new fans on the south side during his time with the team. The speedy outfielder played in 71 games for the White Sox in 2021, and played his role to a tee. There wasn't a lot of offense, as Hamilton recorded a .618 OPS in 127 at-bats, but he did flash some outstanding defense.
Simply speaking, a good vibes dude in the dugout and a fan-favorite, who does the little things needed to win throughout the season.
Still, you should probably keep expectations low for Hamilton heading into spring training. Signing Hamilton to a minor league deal could be looked as a cheap replacement of Adam Engel. However, it is far more likely that Victor Reyes, who also signed a minor league deal, comes in as a backup outfielder in 2023, with Hamilton in camp manly there in case of an injury occurring during spring training.
Nevertheless, Hamilton back in the mix does at least keep the good vibes going for Sox fans.
White Sox Sign Catcher
Not only did the White Sox sign former Royals outfielder Andrew Benintendi, they also added catcher Sebastian Rivero, who saw some time in the majors with Kansas City the last two seasons.
Rivero, 24, signed with the Royals as an international free agent on July 10, 2015. He began the 2021 season at Triple-A, and then made his MLB debut with Kansas City on May 8, 2021. Rivero played in 17 games for the Royals in 2021, and then 17 more during the 2022 season at the major league level.
Nothing really pops off the screen when you look at Rivero's numbers, slashing .247.295/.357, with 20 home runs in 349 minor league games. But it's very possible that White Sox manager Pedro Grifol, who was the bench coach with the Royals, likes some aspect of Rivero's game, most likely the defensive side, that he wanted to add him to the organization.
It is unlikely Rivero will see time in the majors in 2023 with the White Sox, as Yasmani Grandal and Seby Zavala are well established on the active roster, while Carlos Pérez is the other catcher on the team's 40-man roster.
