The Chicago White Sox are close to trading two more pitchers out to the West Coast, as they're about to complete another deal involving a starting pitcher and a reliever. According to Ken Rosenthal, there is serious momentum toward a deal that will send Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
This comes a day after there were reports that the Tamp Bay Rays were in serious talks with the White Sox for Lynn. It appears as though the Dodgers have stepped in and with Kelly added to the deal, then the White Sox probably preferred LA's offer.
Earlier this week, the White Sox surprised most baseball analysts when they were able to acquire a consensus top-100 prospect in their trade with the Los Angeles Angels. Rick Hahn sent two rental pitchers in right-handed starter Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez in exchange for 20-year-old catching prospect Edgar Quero, who is ranked 65th in MLB Pipeline's top-100 prospects lis, and 2021 second-round draft pick Ky Bush.
That situation is certainly unique and it does seem like it was an overpay for a desperate Angels team that is trying to make a playoff push and are still trying to convince Shohei Ohtani to stay with them. Plus, they're getting a better look at Giolito, who the Angels will most likely try to retain following the 2023 season. And well, Giolito has actually been good this year. The same goes for Lopez, who not a shutdown reliever, but at least he's been solid the past few months.
I'm not really sure what the Dodgers love about Lynn other than the 36-year-old's ability to eat innings and Kelly has been off for the majority of this season, too. We'll find out shortly what Hahn was able to get for those two rental pitchers. The Dodgers at least do have some familiarity with Kelly, who was in LA from 2019-21.
UPDATE
Deal is done!
Lance Lynn still has an option for the 2024 season that is worth $18 million that comes with a $1 million buyout. Joe Kelly also has a club option for next year that's worth $9.5 million with a $1 million buyout.
