The offseason is officially here and the White Sox are already doing everything they can to save some money. That includes once again dealing international slot money just so they didn't have to pay Welington Castillo $500,000 to buyout the final year of his deal.
The White Sox traded Castillo and international signing bonus money to the Rangers in exchange for minor leaguer Jonah McReynolds.
The team also did reinstated some players from the injured list and announced that left-handed reliever Josh Osich was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox.
And since it's the day after the World Series, pending free agents are officially on the market. That includes Jose Abreu.
McReynolds, 23, was selected in the 13th round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Rangers. The infielder and outfielder has played in four minor league seasons with the last three being at low-A ball. The right-handed hitter has played in 178 minor league games, slashing .217/.285/.322.
During the season, the White Sox also traded Nate Jones along with international signing bonus money. Teams aren't required to use that international money and at the end it seems the White Sox didn't like any of the top available international free agents.
In all, the White Sox saved almost $2 million off their MLB payroll by trading Castillo and Jones along with the international money.
