When Danny Trevathan signed his new three-year contract, most people likely felt that would be the extent of the notable in-house moves the Chicago Bears would make. They kept Roy Robertson-Harris on a 2nd round tender for his restricted free agent deal. Outside of that, there really wasn't much people felt the Bears could do. Well, apparently GM Ryan Pace might feel differently. At least based on what Ha Ha Clinton-Dix just did.
The safety was a solid player for the Bears in 2019, making 78 tackles and snagging two interceptions. Most felt that the tight financials would make it where the team wouldn't be able to keep him on a long-term extension. Yet Clinton-Dix himself has continued to react in ways that makes one think it is his full intention to stay in Chicago.
That got a much bigger boost when he dropped a not-so-subtle hint in a recent tweet.
Ha Ha Clinton-Dix likely would have to take a discount
If this is truly the case, then it's curious to know what the money would look like. The Bears aren't exactly swimming in cap space and they have that pesky issue of finding help at quarterback still to do. QBs are expensive. If Clinton-Dix wanted to stay, he'd almost have to take a notable discount of some kind that would enable the Bears to maintain some level of cap flexibility. Either that or the team has plans to clear up more space in the near future.
Either way, if this is true the Bears are keeping a smart, athletic and competent safety on the back end of their defense. One who is in his prime and could end up having better years ahead if this unit actually gets to play with a lead from time to time. Until they figure things out on offense, keeping the defense strong remains a priority.
