The Chicago Bears have multiple avenues in which they may or may not address their quarterback problem. There is no question they plan to add one or two new faces to the position. The question on everybody's minds is will that player be competition or will he be a replacement for Mitch Trubisky? Nobody knows for sure. GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy have hinted at a competition, but there is an undercurrent of belief in the Bears beat that they might be open to just forgoing that farce and starting fresh.
Matt Miller of Bleacher Report was discussing team needs in his latest scouting notebook. While he understands quarterback is high on the list, he doesn't think the Bears will end up doing what many are hoping by taking somebody in the 2nd round. He thinks Pace has another route in mind.
"The Bears own two selections in the second round, which will be important for filling crucial holes on the offensive line and in the secondary. Finding competition for Mitchell Trubisky at quarterback could come via trade."
This would seem to fall in line with the way things have developed. It was already reported the Bears had spoken to the Cincinnati Bengals about Andy Dalton. Now there's been a slight uptick in smoke around Derek Carr in Las Vegas. So what he says makes sense.
Chicago Bears plan could be coming into focus
Obviously nothing is set in stone and things can change. Still, if one were to examine the situation it feels like the Bears have a plan in mind. They will trade for their answer at quarterback, whoever that ends up being. Then they will sift through the bargain bin in free agency, letting players like Nick Kwiatkoski and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix secure sizable deals elsewhere. This should set them up with one or two compensatory picks in 2021.
Then they use the draft capital they have left to fill every hole on the roster they can. It's not a bad idea. It hopefully gets them their QB solution and sets them up to have lots of draft flexibility next year. Combine this with the cancellation of pro days and the chances of Pace suddenly falling in love with a draft prospect become even more remote.
