The Chicago Bears appear to be returning to their pattern of searching for a new young quarterback prospect. According to Chicago Bears beat reporter Bradd Biggs, the team is likely to pursue a quarterback if they secure the first overall pick in the draft. The big question is whether they will select USC's Caleb Williams or North Carolina's Drake Maye. It seems the team is already preparing to replace quarterback Justin Fields.
"The Bears are expected to be in the hunt for a quarterback in the '24 draft.. All the struggles they’ve gone through... if they get the No. 1 pick, there’s a payoff waiting."
Is Justin Fields Truly The Problem?
After Brad Biggs tweeted out this article, former Chicago Bears wide receiver Daurice Fountain commented on the post, expressing his confusion about the Bears direction. He mentioned that in his opinion, the quarterback wasn't the issue, based on his experience spending a season with Justin Fields. You can see his tweets below for reference.
The Chicago Bears have a problem developing quarterbacks
Daurice's response can be interpreted in a few ways. Firstly, it suggests that the coaches are the main issue. Secondly, it implies that the people at the top of the Bears franchise is also a big reason of concern. Finally, it raises the possibility that both factors contribute to the overall issue that plagues the franchise.
The Bears just can't develop a quarterback no matter the level of talent a player might have.
Regardless, it is clear that the Bears let Justin Fields down. While Fields definitely has his flaws, it was the responsibility of the coaching staff and the front office to help mask those and construct a team that suited his strengths. While some efforts were made to provide him with better weapons, it is still my belief that they fell short overall. The fact that former players recognize a bigger problem beyond just blaming the quarterback is significant. I remain unconvinced that either Caleb Williams or Drake Maye can overcome the turmoil within the Bears franchise.
I hope I'm wrong.
