The Chicago Bears have plans regarding the quarterback position. Nobody knows what they are. Maybe even they aren't entirely sure either. As of right now, this is what they know. Mitch Trubisky is the only one they have under contract. Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray are free agents. Almost everybody expects them to add at least one new face, probably a veteran of some kind who will compete with Trubisky. The problem is the market appears stagnant. Much of that is because of Tom Brady.
The six-time Super Bowl champion is set to become a free agent for the first time in his 20-year NFL career. Teams are anxious to know where he ends up. Will it be back to New England as many predict or could he actually leave for a new team and a new challenge? Rumors have persisted for weeks that leaving is a very serious possibility. Teams like the Raiders, Titans, and Chargers are tagged as potential landing spots.
One thing is clear.
If Brady were to choose a new home, it would drastically shake up the market for Chicago. That is why a recent couple of moments of Brady caught on camera were so fascinating. It came while the 42-year old was attending a basketball game, of all things, between North Carolina and Syracuse. With him were friend and longtime teammate Julian Edelman and talk show star Jimmy Fallon.
When cameras found them courtside, Edelman smiled and patted his QB on the back, appears to say, "He's coming back. He's coming back."
Brady then turned to him with a slight grin and a long stare. Then right before the shot cuts away, he appeared to say, "He's not."
Obviously that isn't enough to say Tom Brady is out
It is simple speculation. However, things got way more interesting not long after. A fan who was at the game happened to spot Edelman and Brady huddled over the receiver's phone. When they took a video of it and zoomed in, one could clearly make out who they were Facetiming with. None other than Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel.
That doesn't confirm anything but it's hard not to feel the implications of it. Why would Brady be speaking to Vrabel so randomly at a basketball game? Sure they're former teammates from back in the mid-2000s but the timing of it is so eye-opening. Jeff Darlington of ESPN has strong connections to the Patriots and he said the Titans should be considered a favorite to land Brady if he leaves.
This would have pretty significant implications for the Bears.
It would mean Ryan Tannehill joins the quarterback market. This after winning Comeback Player of the Year while taking the Titans to the AFC championship. It would also make the Patriots players in the market. They've been rumored to have interest in the likes of Andy Dalton and Marcus Mariota, two guys heavily connected to Chicago.
This would create an interesting situation for Bears GM Ryan Pace to navigate.
