Like Tyrann Mathieu? The Bears Have Been Talking To His Clone

Anybody who has watched the NFL for the past few years knows the name Tyrann Mathieu. He is undoubtedly one of the most versatile defensive backs in the NFL. Somebody who brings a ton of energy and swagger to a secondary. The Kansas City Chiefs found that out last year as he galvanized their defense to help win a championship. For some time teams have been trying to find the next player like him. He might be in the upcoming 2020 draft and the Chicago Bears have spoken with him.

Amik Robertson is one of the under-the-radar names in this class. A cornerback out of Lousiana Tech, some overlook him for his 5'8 size. However, when turning on the tape he begins to jump off the screen right away. In three years, Robertson collected 14 interceptions, returning three for touchdowns. He also had four sacks with 184 tackles. In that time, he only missed one game. The guy was a playmaker.

Let's put it this way. If Robertson were three inches taller, he'd be in discussions for the 1st round. That is how good he was. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com showed concern for the size issue but admitted that everything else about him was hard to dislike. Including his obvious confidence and swagger.

"Smallish, outside corner with tremendous intensity, swagger and toughness. Needs to handle the athletic challenges as a slot corner in the NFL. He gives rough rides to receivers trying to get away from his press before following it with route recognition and footwork to continue hounding his man.

Physicality overtakes technique at times and he could struggle to mirror the release of savvy NFL slot receivers. The instincts and ball skills are rare and should translate to this level of competition in zone and man as long as he can shadow routes."

While the Bears run a defense that tends to prefer longer corners, they've shown they don't mind employing undersized but physical ones. They signed the 5'9 Buster Skrine last season. With him entering his 30s, the team needs to start thinking about finding someone who can eventually take his place. Robertson would be the perfect fit.
