You knew right away the Chicago Bears loved Roschon Johnson from the moment they picked him in the 4th round. Area scout Joe Syty called him a future "core" piece. Somebody with that "it" factor you can't teach. It's weird to hear that being said about a mid-round pick who spent his entire college career as a backup. Yet Johnson is a special case. Most experts agree his talent is far beyond his draft status. He would've been a highly-productive starter if he hadn't played behind the best running back of a generation in Bijan Robinson.
Much of his success comes from his superb versatility. Not only is he a good runner, but he's also an effective receiver and excellent pass blocker. He earns regular praise for his special teams work as well. It isn't natural talent that makes this possible, though. Those who know him understand it comes from a semi-ridiculous work ethic. This isn't something that popped up overnight, either. It has followed him since high school. His former coach revealed how much of a perfectionist he really is.
Roschon Johnson is a type that usually excels in the NFL.
Often when talking to great players in this league, they will say the same thing. It wasn't the desire for success that motivated them. It was their fear of failure. That is how a young man becomes restless after a big win in which he played really well. Johnson is never satisfied. There are always mistakes that need correcting. It is this mentality that will serve him so well in Chicago. He may not have the starting job right now, but nobody should be surprised if he claims at some point in the near future.
Roschon Johnson himself isn't intimidated by the pro level. He thinks he has an advantage that many playing his position don't. It is the fact he played quarterback for most of his early football career. He can see the game in far more complex ways than typical running backs. That allows him to better identify where weaknesses in the defense will be and what adjustments he should make. All he needs is an opportunity, and this time, no generational talent is in his way.
