The chorus of voices is growing ever larger coming out of Chicago Bears practices. Defensive players sharing what feels like war stories of their encounter with the fierce enemy. It started with Leonard Floyd detailing Mitch Trubisky as a "Pretty Boy Assassin." How he enjoyed skirting the unwritten rules of practice by trying to beat the defense as scout team quarterback.
Soon after two more names came forward in Eddie Jackson and Sam Acho. Jackson detailed the frustrating problems facing the #2 overall pick and how he put so few balls in harms way thanks to his accuracy and decision-making. Acho was drawn in more by his remarkable maturity for being 22-years old. The self-assured confidence he shows.
It seems the latest man to give up his vow of silence is cornerback Prince Amukamara. He corroborated the story by his defensive teammates in his own colorful words.
Prince Amukamara admits Trubisky loves to "toast" defense
“Very, very confident and he’s made some great throws, especially when we go up against him [on] scout,” Amukamara said last Friday. “He’s competing in scout. He’s not just throwing picks to the DBs. He’s really trying to toast us and trying to score. We like that out of him.”It's becoming clearer than ever that the Bears defenders are grateful Trubisky is on the team. It means they have a potentially good quarterback under center for the first time in years. Not only does that make the offense better, it makes them as a defense better having to practice against him. To top it off it also means they don't have to play against him on Sundays. Truth be told the stories coming out of practices are making the wait for Monday Night Football that much harder. Fans are dying to see this kid in action for the first time. He left them wanting so much more after a solid preseason performance. One which many thought was good enough to earn him the starting job outright. It's hard to say what he can do for the team at this point. He's a rookie and their wide receiver group is depleted by injuries. Still, his natural ability and charisma are almost certain to have an impact. If defenders like Amukamara are paying a begrudging respect, then it's going to be a fun ride regardless of early outcomes. It's the sort of feeling Bears fans haven't had in a long time.
