There are times when you simply tip your cap to the other team and Game 2 of the NLDS was a perfect example. The Chicago Cubs had a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning, but the Washington Nationals smacked two home runs and won Game 2, 6-3.
Carl Edwards Jr. began the eighth, allowing a leadoff single and after striking out Trea Turner he was left in to face Bryce Harper. Edwards fell behind in the count 3-1 and then made a huge mistake. He hung a curveball and Harper destroyed the pitch to tie the game.
Mike Montgomery was warming up and you might think why he wasn't in to face Harper, a left-handed hitter. Well, Edwards has better numbers against lefties than Montgomery.
Edwards made a mistake and Harper made him pay. Anthony Rendon walked and then Joe Maddon brought in Montgomery. It didn't get any better. Daniel Murphy singled and then Ryan Zimmerman clubbed a game-winning three run homer.
So, can't win when your most trusted relievers fail to do their job. And by the way, if you're saying Maddon should have brought in Wade Davis, think about the bitching you did last year when he did the same with Arolidis Chapman. It was a shitty loss because the Cubs had a chance to go up 2-0, but hey the Nationals weren't just going to lay down and die. Jose Quintana and Max Scherzer will be the Game 3 starters at Wrigley Field on Monday.
