Top 10 Observations from Bears Training Camp Week 1

The Bears' first week of training camp is nearly done, with just one more practice tomorrow. But here are my top ten observations from week 1.

Justin Fields And DJ Moore Are Destined For A Great Season

From the start, there were hints that Justin Fields and his top receiver, DJ Moore, had a strong connection. Now, just three days into training camp, it's clear that their bond is here to stay. Justin unquestionably trusts DJ, and their chemistry is undeniable.

Tyrique Stevenson Is Battling

Throughout training camp, the rookie CB has frequently faced off against DJ Moore, gaining valuable experience against a top NFL wide receiver. Despite DJ often coming out on top in these reps, Stevenson is proving to be a quick learner and is showcasing significant potential to compete at a high level. As the saying goes, iron sharpens iron.

Best Offensive Player?

Selecting DJ Moore wasn't a straightforward decision as most would think. But he stands out as my top choice. Justin Fields was right behind him though. While Allen Robinson's arrival in Chicago was exciting at the time, DJ Moore's performance surpasses him by a significant margin. He has not only lived up to the initial expectations but also continues to maintain his impressive momentum, showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Best Defensive Player?

Jaylon Johnson looks great. But I am going to go with Kyler Gordon here. It's a bit tough to judge without pads on, but entering his second training camp, he's been truly impressive per reports. He's the guy at the nickel position and seems to have a good sense of the game, earning him the nickname "Spider-Man" by Bears DC Alan Williams. I have a feeling he's going to have an breakout season ahead.

Best Rookie Performance?

Even though it's early, I believe rookie WR Tyler Scott is my top choice. His speed is unreal. The wide receiver competition is tough, but I'm confident Scott will earn his spot in the lineup before week 1.

Darnell Mooney Not Yet At Full Speed

Darnell Mooney's return to the field has been gradual. It will take some time to get up to full speed, but the good news is that he'll be ready for week 1. He's been practicing and seems to be back to his usual self, but we won't know for sure until we see him in regular season games, where the game speed is different.

Velus Jones Update?

Velus Jones Jr. had a tough first season as a rookie, but towards the end of last year, he began to improve. He's now starting the current training camp strongly and appears much more confident and comfortable in the offense. Kevin Fishbain from The Athletic wrote a fantastic story about Velus, discussing how he feels significantly better compared to last year. I recommend everyone to read it. If Velus can secure the kickoff and punt return roles, he stands a good chance of making it onto the Bears roster by the end of camp.

What About Darnell Wright?

Putting the pads on will really help us understand where Darnell Wright is at. I believe he has the potential to be a great tackle in the league, but for now, we don't have much to evaluate.

Bears Edge Rusher D'Anthony Jones Making Noise

The Bears still need to find at least one edge rusher, but it seems like undrafted rookie D'Anthony Jones is showing promise. He had an impressive performance on Friday, getting three sacks and earning recognition from the coaching staff with a daily performance award, as reported by Aaron Wilson.

Justin Fields Has Weapons

Compared to last year's training camp, this year's talent level is strikingly different. Chase Claypool is showing potential, and having both Robert Tonyan and Cole Kmet in the tight end room could make a strong duo. The running back room is impressive, with Khalil Herbert currently leading the race for RB1. The offense has the capability to take over during practice, which is uncommon for a Bears training camp. Though it's not quite like his days at Ohio State, this roster is filled with young, hungry talent.

Next week, the pads will arrive, and the real fun will start.
