Anthony Rizzo will miss a third straight game for the Cubs, as the first baseman attempts to return from back tightness that suddenly popped up Saturday against the Nationals.
Ian Happ will make his third straight start at first, filling for Rizzo.
And it sounds like Rizzo won't return until the Cubs start a weekend series against the Brewers on Friday at the earliest.
Injuries happen and this isn't the first and it won't be the last time Rizzo deals with back issues, but at this point the Cubs shouldn't be shocked that he's being forced to miss more than a couple games.
That means one less player available and it makes Tuesday's roster move even more frustrating.
Before the Cubs started their quick road trip to New York, Cole Hamels was placed on the paternity list. He'll be back to start on Saturday and in the meantime the Cubs called up right-hander James Norwood He's the ninth reliever in the bullpen.
Again, since Tuesday it was pretty evident that Rizzo wasn't going to play against the Mets, so why not just call up Ben Zobrist already! The Cubs are bringing him up at the end of this week anyway, so why not do it when the team is missing a bat.
Sigh. Oh well. Hopefully Rizzo does return by Friday.
