Anthony Rizzo sprained his right ankle during Sunday's game against the Pirates and although there was no fracture the Cubs first baseman had an MRI on Monday and the results aren't absolutely horrible, but they're not good either.
Rizzo will be in a walking boot for 5-7 days, meaning he'll miss the rest of the home stand, including a four-game series against the Cardinals. Given how late it is in the season, it doesn't look likely that Rizzo will return this year.
The only good news is that there won't be any surgery needed.
Rizzo, at this point, is staying optimistic about a potential return.
The Cubs are currently two games behind the Cardinals in the division, 1.5 back for the top Wild Card spot and a game ahead of the Brewers for the second Wild Card spot.
Javier Báez is hoping to return if the Cubs reach the postseason, while Craig Kimbrel is slowly returning from an elbow issue. Kimbrel will face live batters on Tuesday. Addison Russell is currently on the concussion list.
The Cubs start a three-game series against the Reds Monday night.
