Ben Zobrist started in the leadoff spot for the second game in a row and after a four month absence from the team he had his best game of the season. The 38-year-old went 3-for-3, with two walks and he scored three times in the Cubs 10-5 win over the Brewers Thursday night.
Yet, the veteran made a huge mistake on the bases in the sixth inning, but lucky for him he was bailed out by Brewers right fielder Christian Yelich.
Anthony Rizzo was up with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, with the game tied at four. He hit a hard line drive to right field, where Yelich made the catch and tried to throw out David Bote at home.
However, Yelich would have had an easy double play at second because Zobrist was well off the base, maybe thinking Rizzo's line drive was going to fall. Brewers shortstop Orlando Arcia was trying to get Yelich's attention, but it was too late and Zobrist was let off the hook.
What would have been an inning-ending double play instead resulted in a go-ahead sac fly for the Cubs.
But things got a lot worse for the Brewers and a lot better for the Cubs because Willson Contreras followed up with an infield single and then Kyle Schwarber blasted a grand slam.
The Cubs will take any break they can get. They've been on the wrong side of several already this year.
