So, the Cubs made a trade and they got a lefty from the Giants! Tony Watson? Will Smith?!?!?
Nope. The Cubs acquired Derek Holland.
The 32-year-old lefty has a career 4.51 ERA and has primarily been a starter since making his MLB debut in 2009. This year for the Giants, he's pitched in 31 games, making seven starts. He hasn't been very good, with a 5.90 ERA and 1.50 WHIP.
The only positive is that Holland has been great against lefties, holding them to a .471 OPS this year in 77 at-bats. So, there's your other lefty in the bullpen?
Cubs fans should still expect at least one more move and hopefully it's bigger than this.
It's obviously not a huge move, but if Holland is used correctly as a left-handed specialist, then it could end up being a solid pick up. We'll see.
Holland is owed a little more than $2.3 million for the rest of this season.
By the way, Holland won't be immediately added to the Cubs roster, so the DFA of Tim Collins is the corresponding move to make room for Ian Happ.
