Earlier this week The Athletic wrote about the Cubs' interest in trading for a couple outfielders. The first name, Nick Castellanos, has been reported elsewhere too as being a trade target for the Cubs, but the second name was new. Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Jarrod Dyson.
Since then, the Cubs have demoted Addison Russell to Triple-A and Ian Happ is being called up and will join the team in time to begin their weekend series against the Brewers. The Cubs are starting to make some changes, but just because Happ is getting another chance doesn't mean the front office has stopped looking at adding more outfield depth.
According to Jon Heyman, the Cubs are still showing interest in Dyson.
Dyson is still pretty good defensively and his current .253/.333/.364 slash line would be an upgrade over Albert Almora Jr. on the bench. Dyson would also bring a speed element that the Cubs have lacked for years.
The 34-year-old is 22-for-24 in stolen base attempts this year and he's been great hitting away from Chase Field, which has been a pitcher's park in 2019. Dyson has a .833 OPS in 132 at-bats on the road this year compared to a .558 OPS in 129 at-bats at home.
The Cubs could certainly use Dyson and he'd be fine as a fallback plan.
