Right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey was placed on the injured list before Sunday's game and the White Sox called up a reliever, Thyago Vieira. But now they obviously need a starting pitcher who can at the very least eat up some innings. The move hasn't been officially announced yet, but all signs point to Odrisamer Despaigne starting against the Nationals.
Go ahead, try saying Odrisamer Despaigne correctly on your first try. $100 if you do. We'll wait.......
Anyway, the 32-year-old Cuban will be making his 48th career MLB start and first with the White Sox. The righty made his MLB debut with the Padres in 2014, and has also pitched for the Orioles, Marlins and Angels.
In 2018, Despaigne had a 6.69 ERA and 1.82 WHIP in 39 innings for Miami. In his career, he's recorded a 4.94 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 349.2 innings. Positive? He's been slightly better as a starter than reliever in his career 4.64 ERA vs. 5.80.
The White Sox picked him up in May and since then Despaigne's been in Triple-A. In four games, including three starts, Despaigne has only given up four earned runs in 18 innings (2.00 ERA). Overall in 59.1 innings with two different Triple-A teams this year, he has a 3.34 ERA, which is pretty damn good considering the league is allowing a record amount of runs this season.
So yeah, no Dylan Cease...yet and good luck writing angry tweets and trying to figure out how to spell Odrisamer Despaigne.
