Nicky Delmonico was once beloved, right? I mean, he was unpredictably good when he came up in what was a bad 2017 season. Anyway, for any big Nicky Delmonico fans still out there, today is a sad day, as the White Sox have released the outfielder.
That was just one of several moves the club made before the start of their quick two-game set against the Nationals. After placing Dylan Covey on the injured list, the White Sox needed a starter. So, they're going with 32-year-old Odrisamer Despaigne.
To make that move, the White Sox needed to clear a space on the 25-man roster and on the 40-man roster. So, that's why Delmonico was let go. As far as the 25-man roster, reliever Jace Fry was placed on the injured list to make way for Despaigne.
It's been a brutal 2019 for Delmonico. He entered spring training trying to win some playing time on the Opening Day roster, but he suffered a concussion in March. Then, he was called up after Eloy Jimenez injured his ankle, but Delmonico struggled and he was playing with a bad shoulder. Ultimately, Delmonico had season-ending surgery and now he's been released.
Despaigne will make his first MLB start of 2019. He has a 4.94 ERA in more than 300 innings in the majors. The veteran right-hander has pitched for the Padres, Orioles, Angels and Marlins, making 47 MLB starts. He had a 2.00 ERA in 18 innings at Triple-A Charlotte after the White Sox signed him in May.
